Advanced Dog Training Points For Conditioning Your Dog

Akeisha wrote to me with some terribly sensible questions. I’ve included her letter (and my responses) below:

Hi,

It’s Akeisha again.

I do see what you mean if it’s on incessantly the dog will soon forget it is on and then can behave regardless. Ok, thus the dog never wears a buckle collar again? This is often what irks me. I need to be in a position to manage the dog no matter what collar is on not just the pinch or it may be no collar the least bit and also the dog still behaves. What if the owner for a few reason soars the collar then they place the buckle collar on for ID however then forget the pinch collar? Then there is no control.

[Adam Replies] WRONG! The dog gets conditioned. Initiate the collar for awhile. Does not matter.

Does one ever in the training go back to the buckle collar after months of what you recommend with a dog that’s pleased with doing the commands?

[Adam Replies] Yes, the dog does the command as a result of he’s happy and he likes it. But eventually, there can be one thing that tempts him. This can be where conditioning comes in.

Assume of it like this: You’ve lived in the identical house for ten years, right? You arise in the middle of the night and you reach for the sunshine switch that’s to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to succeed in out to the LEFT of the door.

At some point you travel and keep in a very hotel. You wake up in the center of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch… even though you cognitively saw {that the} switch is on the RIGHT.

In fact, you’ll rouse for many nights– perhaps even weeks or months– and still reach out to the LEFT, while the switch is currently on the right. Some folks will continue getting to the LEFT for the rest of their lives. Some will begin about to the right.

Those individuals need to be reinforced. Get it?

Motivational corrections if on the right dog will not frighten them or create them hate you I understand but are not there different ways that except using the collar that will eventually be established thought training that can enable you to take the collar off and have control?

[Adam Replies] Yeah, this approach you’ll take the collar off and have control, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. However eventually you’ll have to go back and reinforce, for many dogs. And positively if you start expecting to work the dog around new distractions that it’s never been proofed around, like chickens if the dog has never seen chickens.

Look, I don’t make the rules. The dog isn’t a robot that you’ll suddenly say, “He’s done” and expect him to act consistently for the rest of his life. Like every relationship you have with another person, boundaries want to be established and maintained. The dog is like your wife or husband… they can eventually check you. :)

Last query, how can the dog not notice the do not have it on since it feels a lot different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at school I’ve got gotten used to it however I do realize when it is off? Just for the record I have no downside with pinches, several members in my four-H club use them and that they work nice on the proper dog.

[Adam Replies] Because the means you must be using the pinch collar is {that the} dog (since he has limited reason and logic) does not KNOW that it is the pinch collar that enables you to administer him good corrections. But it’s a lot of than the pinch collar. If I place the dog during a variety of small yards, with no collar on … and I am able to chase him down and create him come back to me, if he does not come after I call… then the dog can learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I can build him do it, if he doesn’t. So, the pinch collar and therefore the long line make my job easier, but ultimately, the dog knows (or he thinks a minimum of) that I’m a man of my word and once I tell him to try and do one thing: If he does not do it, I am going to form him do it. And his life will be a heap more fun if he does it willingly. Therefore the dog starts to extrapolate this principle to other commands, too.

Hope I’m not being irritating I simply like to grasp why bound trainers worth bound ways over others since I really like competing in obedience with my dog.

[Adam Replies] Keep training.

That’s all for currently, people!
